President's Forward
Setting Sights on New Horizons
It is my great pleasure in the capacity of the 15th President of the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association to take this opportunity to highlight some of the accomplishments of the Hong Kong's optical industry in 2006.
Hong Kong's total exports of spectacles from January to November 2006 performed satisfactorily. The exports of spectacles, sunglasses, lenses, and frames reached US$1,270 million, an encouraging growth of over 20% compared to the same period of 2005. The outstanding performance in export gives Hong Kong a prestigious status in global optical field. Hong Kong is the leading exporter of spectacles and frames in Asia and the second in the world after Italy over the past decade.
Since incorporated as a non-profit-making organization in 1982, Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association has now a history of over 20 years and plays a vital role in promoting the industry. Thus, our members have benefited a lot from it. Hong Kong optical industry has enjoyed a tremendous growth in the last decade. It is really a pleasure that the international buyers recognize our outstanding achievement as well.
Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association with the membership covers over 80% optical manufacturers in Hong Kong. We promote state-of-the-art technologies by fostering collaboration among our members, and work closely with Hong Kong industry supporting organizations to attribute our products keeping track of former committee members. For the future, we will continue to maintain a close partnership with our customers in jointly increasing the added value of the products and further help them to explore the market frontiers.
In order to further consolidate Hong Kong's position in the global optical industry, the Association in collaboration with Hong Kong Productivity Council has just produced a 20 minutes video CD on modern manufacturing methods for eyewear industry in both English and Chinese version. This video production has three objective: first, to provide our customers a better idea about the present optical manufacturing in Hong Kong; second, to equip technological knowledge for our designers and engineers; and third, to attract more talents to the industry, thereby providing fresh momentum and maintaining its sustained edge, which is also our highest aspiration.
While many manufacturers have established R&D departments to innovate and improve product designs and quality, Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association and Hong Kong Productivity Council join hands recently to specify a set of CEO Optical Frame Standard Test Equipment in product testing. It includes eight required test devices and a concise manual in Chinese, with a view to help local optical frame manufacturers to build internal product testing capability, tap their product development potential, save time and test expenses, and improve their productivity while assuring quality.
Eyewear has now become fashion accessories rather than mere vision correction tools. Innovative designs will be the key to explore customers and expand markets. We will make more efforts to improve eyewear designs and expand the growth space of the eyewear industry in Hong Kong by making Hong Kong eyewear designers more recognizable in the market.
I am confident that the opportunities ahead for the industry are plentiful. Yet, we must meet challenges and competition head on. In order to strive for more support for a better optical manufacturing operating environment, I will lead the liaison between HKOMA and the relevant government departments, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and other institution in the manufacturing industries. At the same time, I will endeavor to increase unity among our members, to encourage them to upgrade the design and technology of their products, and by all means to foster the efficiency and competitiveness of the industry. In addition, HKOMA will collaborate closely with the oversea counterparts for upgrading our global recognition as well as further consolidating our market strength.
Lastly, I wish you all good health and best of luck. Thank you.
